Can You Tickle Me?
Fortune-teller, gazing into the crystal ball, to a Frog: “You are going to meet a beautiful young woman. From the moment, she sets eyes on you, she will have an insatiable desire to know all about you. She will be compelled to get close to you – you will fascinate her.”Frog: “Where am I? At a singles club?”
Fortune-teller: “Biology class”.
So what’s this about? If you haven’t noticed, it’s a joke. A joke is something that is said or done to aggravate laughter or bring about enjoyment. Joke is a short and humorous story, or a prankish act, as an epigram. It was originally a colloquial or slang word that means something not to be taken seriously. It can take various forms, executions, context, and style. Cracking a joke is like narrating a story, a comical one. It has two parts, the setting; and the tricky one, the climax or widely recognized as the punch line, which is the phrase that produces the humorous effect. While anybody can create a joke, not everybody can crack it successfully. I’d say, it requires talent and skill, yet a funny face is optional. The humorous effect of the joke can be attributed to various factors such as the speaker himself, in other words, his stage presence, his funny bone, talent & skill; the context of the joke; and the delivery of the skit, which includes the conveyance of the punch line, it’s dramatic effect. I could say that not everybody could be a joker yet everybody can become one, in a matter of time. So if you are wondering why not every face is comical, not every gag is entertaining, and not every punch line is humorous, then wonder no more. Because it’s not a big surprise! To some, it will be just a piece of cake, those lucky ones who have it in their genes, but the only hope for those who do not have that incorporated in their DNA, is practice. To quip a joke is like facing an audience who sees different perspectives, which is an area of public speaking. Yet to dissect more intensely, not all good public speakers are funny jokers. Because to utter a joke that tickles the listeners entail a whole new dimension of caliber & dexterity that not all speakers have. If you have the aura of a serious speaker, you may try cracking a joke, but don’t expect that everyone find it funny.
Telling a joke is one of the unique styles of communication. It creates a rapport between the speaker and the listener, bequeathing listening and comprehension skills a lift. It gives the audience a signal that they can count on being entertained, which sets you afoot to common ground with them. However, not all jokes call for extreme wit and mind work because there are different types, executions and deliveries that make them distinguishable from one another. However, certainly sarcastic and offensive jokes, such as a wisecrack don’t entertain. Although some find it hilarious - when you are not the one being attacked by the comedian. Even so, these amuse the spectators of stand up comedians in comedy bars, being cautious not to sit in front to avoid being assaulted by their jokes. You might as well think again if you want to deliver jokes unrelated to the topic, and those that require complex set-up that divert the attention of the audience. Nevertheless, if you are indeed eager to stir up the crowd with laughter and create an impression, try cracking a modest joke, something self-depreciating. It can chuckle the listeners, and can bank up goodwill on your part. A topical joke can also work when you try to insert it on certain sentences between conversations and speeches to create a dynamic effect to it. A short joke, the kind where you ask a rhetorical question and answer it yourself, can do a good job as well. If not everything works out fine on your day, try joking about it. It’ll lighten up everyone’s spirits, and you don’t have to have the funny bone to do it successfully. As they say, when the going gets tough, the tough gets going.
